Bariloche International Colloquia of Philosophy
In 1992, the Bariloche Foundation Philosophy Program started a biennial series called Bariloche International Colloquia of Philosophy. These Colloquia have always been sponsored by the most important philosophical societies in Argentina (Asociación Filosófica Argentina, Sociedad Argentina de Análisis Filosófico, Centro de Investigaciones Filosóficas) and by the Philosophy Departments and Institutes of Buenos Aires University, Cordoba National University, La Plata National University and Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. They have also received the support of UNESCO, and at present, they are part of the activities of the UNESCO Philosophy Chair, led by Oscar Nudler. Several governmental and non-governmental organizations have also supported this activity, as has been the case with the International Council of Philosophy and Human Sciences (Paris), CONICET, FONCYT, Fundación Antorchas, etc. Renowned researchers from Argentina, Latin America (mainly Brazil and Mexico), the United States and Canada, as well as from Europe (particularly Spain, France and Italy) took part in the successive editions of this series. There is an Academic Advisory Committee made up of renowned researchers and chaired by Prof. G. Klimovsky, as well as an Organizing Committee comprising researchers with an important academic tradition.
Among the results so far are a set of books published by well-known editorial houses, such as Paidós, Cento Editor de America Latina, Biblos, UNAM, etc. Each of these books contains a selection of the research work presented at the different meetings. Besides their effect on the philosophical community, the Colloquia have had a significant cultural impact, especially through their dissemination by the regional and national media.
Each of the Bariloche International Colloquia of Philosophy was structured around a focal issue, which prompted contributions from different philosophical areas and traditions. Colloquia I and II focused on the topic of Rationality regarding science and other fields. Colloquia III and IV focused on Philosophy Today, with a discussion of the state-of-the-art and the perspectives regarding the main philosophical problems. In Colloquium V, the main topic was Philosophy and History of Science. Colloquium VI focused on Ontology as a philosophical discipline and as the foundation of scientific theories, ethic, political and esthetic doctrines, etc. Colloquium VII focused on Change: its Nature and Modalities. The topic of change was approached from different perspectives: metaphysical, epistemological, scientific, moral, political, esthetic. In Colloquium VIII the main topic was Language and Philosophy. Problems related to philosophical semantics and pragmatics were discussed here, as well as the relevance of the linguistic turn and aspects of language in relation to several disciplines.
